Current
Kansas Ethanol Production
13 dry mill ethanol plants are currently in operation in Kansas
with a capacity of about
504.5 million gallons. (As of May 20, 2008) Current Kansas
production creates a market for about 180 million bushels of sorghum
and corn. The two grains are interchangeable in the ethanol-making
process.
One-third of
the grain used for ethanol returns to the food stream as wet or dry
distillers grains (DDGS), a valued, high-nutrient livestock feed.
Combined Kansas corn and sorghum production normally ranges between
500 million and 600 million bushels per year. The 2007 Kansas crop
produced 730 million bushels of corn and sorghum
combined. Kansas’ ethanol plants bring millions of dollars of
revenue and economic development to Kansas and the rural communities
where they are located.
